Anthony Scott Poindexter (born July 28, 1976) is a former American college and professional football player in the National Football League (NFL) for a single season. He played college football for the University of Virginia, and earned All-American honors. He was drafted late in the seventh round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens, and he played professionally for the NFL's Cleveland Browns. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the University of Connecticut. ==Early years== Poindexter was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. He attended New London Academy, Forest Middle School, and Jefferson Forest High School in Forest, Virginia, and played for the Jefferson Forest Cavaliers middle school football team and high school football team. In middle school, he played quarter back and led his team to an undefeated season. Following his high school career, where he played quarter back and safety, he "was () the Group AA Defensive Player of the Year in Virginia in 1993 after leading the Cavaliers to two consecutive Group AA Division 3 state championships, beating Matoaca both years in the finals. Poindexter's sophomore year, his brother, John, who went on to excel as a wide receiver at Ferrum College, quarterbacked the team to the state finals, where they lost to Nottoway.
